Ludowici is the budget-and-acreage play, and we're not going to dress it up as anything else. It's a small Long County town, a genuine Fort Stewart bedroom community, and it has the cheapest houses in the Stewart area — median under $200k. If your priority list starts with "keep the payment low" or "give me land," this is where the list ends.
The honest trade: you're 25–30 minutes from post, and you're not buying restaurants, nightlife, or shopping. Ludowici doesn't have them. What it has is space, quiet, and prices that let an E-5 bank part of their BAH instead of spending all of it. Three-bedroom rents run $1,200–$2,350 with a median around $1,700 — against a 2026 E-5 with-dependents rate of $2,310, that's a comfortable fit, not a stretch.
The part that surprises people: this is a veteran town. A lot of soldiers who finished their careers at Stewart looked at the whole map and chose Long County to stay. That tells you something no listing photo can — the people with the most complete picture of this area voted for Ludowici with their own money.
And the schools carry a credential most small districts can't claim: Long County High School and Smiley Elementary have both won Georgia Military Flagship School awards. Small district, but one that has proven it knows how to take care of military kids.
Median Home Price: Under $200k — the cheapest houses in the Fort Stewart area.
3-Bedroom Rent Range: $1,200–$2,350 per month, median around $1,700.
BAH Fit: 2026 E-5 with-dependents BAH for the Fort Stewart area is $2,310. A median Ludowici 3BR rental sits roughly $600 under that.
Lot Sizes: This is the acreage market. Larger lots and rural parcels are the draw — the kind of space the subdivisions closer to post can't offer.
Commute: About 25–30 minutes to post.
Who Lives Here: Active-duty Stewart households plus a large veteran community — a genuine bedroom community for the post, not a random small town.
School District: Long County Schools — Walker Pre-K, Long County Primary (K-1), Smiley Elementary (2-3), McClelland Elementary (4-5), Long County Middle, Long County High (~1,353 students). Long County High and Smiley Elementary are both Georgia Military Flagship School award winners.
All figures are approximate and move with the market. Verify current numbers with your agent before making decisions.
Where you'll grocery shop: Plan your runs. Ludowici covers the basics, but the big-box shopping lives closer to post on the Hinesville side. Most residents here fold the grocery trip into the commute rather than making it a separate errand.
The local coffee spot: Your own kitchen, most mornings. Ludowici is not a coffee-shop town, and nobody here is pretending otherwise. That's part of the deal you're making for the land and the price.
Friday night dinner: Cooking out on your own acreage is the default. When you want a real restaurant night, you're driving — toward Hinesville or beyond. Budget the miles the way you budget the mortgage: they're part of the math.
School pickup rhythm: Small district, familiar faces. With Long County High at about 1,353 students and the lower grades split into small campuses — Walker Pre-K through McClelland Elementary — the staff knows the families. Two of those schools hold Georgia Military Flagship awards, so a mid-year PCS kid isn't a novelty here.
Saturday mornings: Mowing something. Probably a lot of something. Yard projects, trucks in driveways, neighbors who wave — many of them veterans who did their own PCS rodeo and settled here on purpose.
What you won't find: Walkability, nightlife, or shopping variety. If you need amenities within ten minutes, look at Hinesville. If a low payment, real land, and a quiet town full of people who get military life matter more, Ludowici lines up.
