Fort Stewart runs a second installation: Hunter Army Airfield, a subordinate post inside Savannah, roughly 40 minutes from Stewart's main gate. Hunter is home to the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the 224th Military Intelligence Battalion, and the 260th Quartermaster Battalion. Which installation you're assigned to should drive the entire housing search — Stewart assignments usually point to the Hinesville side, Hunter assignments to Savannah.
The climate is humid subtropical, and it is not subtle: average humidity around 75 percent, summer highs around 90, and a muggy stretch that runs June through September. Spring and fall bring the sand gnats — the biting no-see-ums that breed in the salt marsh and turn up on warm, windless days. Locals plan around them; you will too.
This is also coastal hurricane country. Liberty and Bryan counties sit in Georgia's official coastal evacuation zones, so look up any address you're considering with GEMA's evacuation-zone tool at gema.georgia.gov and sign up for AlertGeorgia when you arrive. It's a one-time task that turns storm season into a plan instead of a scramble.
