How Schools Around Fort Stewart
Actually Work.

If you'd never heard of Hinesville or Liberty County until last week, this section is for you. Three things to understand before any of the rankings or zones make sense.

FACT 01

On Post, DoDEA Runs It — Through 6th Grade.

Fort Stewart has three DoDEA schools on the installation — Diamond Elementary, Kessler Elementary and Murray Elementary — covering pre-K through grade 6. There is no DoDEA middle or high school here: from 7th grade on, kids living on post attend Liberty County public schools. If you have a middle or high schooler, the off-post district question applies to you even if you live on the installation.

FACT 02

Off Post, Your County Decides.

There's no single "Fort Stewart school district." Hinesville, Flemington, Midway and Walthourville are Liberty County Schools. Richmond Hill is Bryan County. Ludowici is Long County. And families stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah are looking at Savannah-Chatham. Your address — not your gate — decides the district, and each one runs its own calendar, registration and busing. Confirm the district before you sign a lease.

FACT 03

The Ratings Spread Is Real.

We're not going to sugarcoat it: Bryan County (Richmond Hill) is the region's academic standout, and Liberty County's test scores trail state averages. But Liberty is also consistently praised as one of the most military-supportive districts anywhere, with a 91.6% graduation rate — and two Long County schools have won Georgia Military Flagship School awards. Rankings are one input. Read the full picture below before you decide.

Vocabulary You'll Need
DoDEA
Department of Defense Education Activity — the DoD's own school system. At Fort Stewart, DoDEA runs the three on-post schools (Diamond, Kessler and Murray Elementary), pre-K through grade 6. Grades 7–12 attend Liberty County public schools.
School Zone
The geographic boundary that determines which school your child attends based on home address. In this region zones are set county district by county district — there is no single area-wide map.
Georgia Military Flagship School
A Georgia award recognizing schools for outstanding support of military-connected students. Long County High School and Smiley Elementary in Ludowici have both won it.
Grade-Band Campus
Bryan County's unusual structure in Richmond Hill: instead of neighborhood zones, every child of a given grade attends the same campus — one building for PK–1, another for grades 2–3, and so on up the ladder.
School Locator
Liberty County's address-lookup tool, on the district homepage at libertyschools.org. Type your street name and it autocompletes to show your zoned schools before you commit to an address.
School Liaison Office
Fort Stewart's on-post office for school questions — registration, transfers, mid-year transitions. Reach them through the installation's school support services before you sign anything.
Interstate Compact (MIC3)
The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. All 50 states belong — it smooths mid-year PCS transfers on records, placement, graduation requirements and activity eligibility.
School-Specific Sponsor
Student peer programs that pair incoming students with current students. Critical for mid-year PCS transitions.
Military Family Support

The Support Systems That Actually Exist Here.

These districts didn't add military support as an afterthought — they grew up around the 3rd Infantry Division. Liberty County is consistently praised as one of the most military-supportive districts military families encounter, and two Long County schools hold Georgia Military Flagship School awards for their support of military-connected kids. Every district here operates under the Interstate Compact, which protects your kid's records, placement and activity eligibility in a mid-year PCS. Start with Fort Stewart's School Liaison Office — they'll tell you exactly which district and school your address lands in before you commit to it.

Coastal Georgia · The Districts

Four Districts, One Rule: Your Address Decides.

Liberty County Schools — where most Stewart PCS moves land. Serves Hinesville, Flemington, Midway and Walthourville. Two high schools: Bradwell Institute and Liberty County High. Test scores trail state averages — 32% of 5th graders proficient in math vs 44% statewide — but the district is repeatedly praised as military-supportive, with a 91.6% graduation rate. District office: 200 Bradwell St, Hinesville, (912) 876-2161.
Bryan County Schools — the academic standout. Serves Richmond Hill. Richmond Hill High carries a Niche A grade, ranks #68 in Georgia, and graduates 96% of its students. Unusual structure: grade-band campuses instead of neighborhood zones, so there's no public zone lookup — contact the district.
Long County Schools — small, and decorated for military support. Serves Ludowici. One ladder: Walker Pre-K, Long County Primary, Smiley Elementary, McClelland Elementary, then Long County Middle and High. Long County High and Smiley Elementary have both won Georgia Military Flagship School awards.
Savannah-Chatham — for Hunter-side families. If you're stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, quality varies significantly school by school and neighborhood by neighborhood. Research the specific school your address zones into, not the district average.

Military Flagship
Grades 9-12 · Ludowici, GA · Long County Schools
A Georgia Military Flagship School award winner — state recognition for outstanding support of military-connected students. About 1,353 students, and the top of Long County's single K-12 ladder.
Why It Matters Rankings measure test scores. The Flagship award measures whether a school knows what to do with a kid who's mid-PCS, mid-deployment, or both. If you are weighing Ludowici's budget-friendly housing, this tips the scale.
Smiley Elementary School
Military Flagship
Grades 2-3 · Ludowici, GA · Long County Schools
Long County's second Georgia Military Flagship School award winner — two of the district's schools now hold the state's recognition for military-family support.
Why It Matters When both an elementary and the high school in the same small district earn the award, that's district culture, not a one-off. Your kids would be far from the only military-connected students in the building.

Coastal Georgia's districts run their own program options rather than a single area-wide magnet system. Ask Liberty, Bryan or Long County directly about advanced, CTE and dual-enrollment offerings for the year you arrive.

Beyond The Public Districts

Private School
Options.

Private and faith-based schools operate in Hinesville, Richmond Hill and the Savannah area. We don't list individual schools here because we haven't verified them to our standard — and a school's website is not the same as a conversation with families who send their kids there.

If private education is on your list, start with the Fort Stewart School Liaison Office and other military families already in the area — they'll tell you which options are worth a visit, what tuition actually runs, and how each school handles mid-year PCS arrivals.
Beyond The Rankings

What Rankings Don't
Tell You About Schools.

Niche, GreatSchools, US News — they all rank schools on standardized metrics. Real-world fit for a PCS family runs on different signals. Here are six things rankings miss.

01

Teacher Retention

A school with great test scores and 40% annual teacher turnover is unstable. A B-rated school with a 90% retention rate often has a better classroom experience. Ask the principal directly.

02

Mid-Year Transition Support

Some schools have formal sponsor programs pairing new students with current students. Others leave it to chance. PCS families need to know which is which — it's the difference between a smooth transition and a brutal one.

03

Military-Connected Enrollment

A school where 30% of students are military-connected operates differently than one where 5% are. Higher density means more shared experience, more deployment-aware staff, and a built-in community for your kids.

04

Specialty Programs vs. General Track

A school's overall ranking averages everything. But if your student has a specific interest — STEM, performing arts, CTE — a school's specialty program in that area matters more than the overall rating.

05

Active Parent Community

The PTO presence, the volunteer culture, the parent communication channels — these differ wildly between schools and they shape your daily experience as a parent more than test scores ever will.

06

Deployment Awareness

Does the counseling staff understand what a deployment cycle does to a kid? Is there a deployment-aware homework policy? These questions never appear in rankings but matter every single day for military families.
