Balfour Beatty Communities manages the homes on both posts: Fort Stewart Family Homes at Stewart and Hunter AAF Homes in Savannah. The garrison's Army Housing Office oversees them and handles disputes and off-post help for free.

How to apply

  1. Fort Stewart Family Homes is the on-post community for active-duty Army families assigned to Stewart. Select neighborhoods also take qualified retirees, DoD civilians and the general public. Source: Fort Stewart Family Homes · checked 2026-10-03
  2. You can start an application before you have every document. A completed application puts you on the waitlist by rank and family size, but you won't be offered a home until the supporting documents are in. Source: Fort Stewart Family Homes · checked 2026-10-03
  3. Documents for active duty: stamped orders, proof of the dependents who will live with you, a valid ID with a DA Form 31 (or equivalent), a signed housing application and an LES. Source: Fort Stewart Family Homes · checked 2026-10-03
  4. Apply within 30 days and your eligibility date is the day you left your last duty station. Apply later and it is your application date. An unaccompanied tour such as Korea can earn up to 14 months of credit. Source: Fort Stewart Family Homes · checked 2026-10-03

Neither choice is right for everyone. On post trades choice and equity for simplicity: utilities and upkeep folded into your BAH, a short drive to work. Off post you keep the BAH, pick your school district, and handle everything yourself.
